Ford 'Syncs' With Microsoft's Bluetooth-Based System

by Jennifer LeClaire

Ford 'Syncs' With Microsoft's Bluetooth-Based SystemMicrosoft's Sync for automobiles -- which includes hands-free Bluetooth technology and an in-vehicle operating system -- will be offered as an option in Ford vehicles under an agreement the companies have entered. Ford is late to the game, though. Acura, BMW, Lexus, Lincoln and Jeep are among the manufacturers that already equip vehicles with built-in Bluetooth.

Ford (NYSE: F) is jumping on the Bluetooth bandwagon, and it is betting on Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) to help it gain momentum. The companies have reached a deal to put the software giant's technology into some Ford cars, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

Microsoft's Sync, which includes hands-free Bluetooth wireless and an in-vehicle operating system, will become an option for the entire line of Ford vehicles in 2008, the WSJ said. The Ford Focus and Five Hundred sedans will be the first two vehicles to offer the system.

Like other Bluetooth systems, Sync aims to let drivers communicate on their mobile phones hands-free. Sync would also enable other wireless information transfers in the vehicle, such as e-mail and music downloads, the paper revealed.

Mainstreaming Bluetooth
Bluetooth in autos is nothing new. Acura, BMW, Lexus, Lincoln and Jeep are among the manufacturers that already equip vehicles with built-in Bluetooth. Chrysler was the first in North America to offer the technology. Ford is late to the wireless party.

Although Bluetooth is no longer revolutionary, its uses are still evolving, said Burton Group Senior Wireless Analyst Mike Disabato.

"Bluetooth hit maturity in the early part of this year, and now it's pervasive," he told TechNewsWorld.

"Next, we'll see iPods with Bluetooth headphones and home theaters that use ultra-wideband technologies to get rid of that tangle of spaghetti," Disabato said, referring to the many electronic equipment cords running into television ports.

Driving in the Fast Lane

In the meantime, Bluetooth adoption in the automobile sector is likely to continue gaining momentum. Bluetooth will become a feature in a third of new vehicles in 2012, increasing from just 3 percent in 2005, Strategy Analytics predicted.

The research firm pointed to five key factors that have led to a surge in automotive Bluetooth applications over the past 18 months: growing consumer awareness of Bluetooth; rapid adoption of Bluetooth on cellular phones; strong automotive consumer demand for hands-free solutions; increasing availability of Bluetooth solutions in the original equipment and aftermarket; and legislative measures.

"Automotive pricing, promotion, and product positioning of Bluetooth versus other in-vehicle features will be critical to how take rates develop over the next two years," said Clare Hughes, Strategy Analytics Automotive Practice analyst. "As we have already seen with portable navigation, poor competitiveness from car makers and automotive system suppliers will result in aftermarket vendors taking a greater share of the growing consumer demand for Bluetooth."

Betting on Ultra-Wideband

Bluetooth is not the only wireless technology to make headway, as Disabato mentioned. The wireless communication scenario is witnessing a surge in new generation technologies such as ultra-wideband (UWB).

UWB will find its place because it can transmit vast amounts of data over short distances using only minimal power. That's a critical characteristic with mobile devices running on battery power or having limited access to power supply.

"For instance, UWB has the ability to transfer data in the region of 480 Mbps and is soon likely to surge up to beyond 1 Gbps or more," said Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Venkat Malleypula. "Furthermore, this high speed interconnectivity is not restricted to wireless environments but is possible over power lines and coaxial media as well."

In short, regardless of the technology consumers adopt for various applications in the home, in the car, in the office or on the streets -- the future looks wireless.

Five-door GTI is bound for the US

by Dan Roth

Five-door GTI is bound for the USNot wanting to be left in the sales dust by the quattroporte Civic Si, Volkswagen intends to bring the 5-door version of the GTI mkV stateside for 2007. That's great news for those who love the driving dynamics of the GTI, but need or want the additional doors. It will add $500 to the bottom line, and 60 pounds at the scales, but other than that, you'll come out unscathed. The latest generation of the Golf/Rabbit platform is peerless in its class, and the GTI model has had its teeth sharpened big-time. Paying homage to the original GTI formula while leaving room for updates to equipment levels and safety gear, the latest GTI is a winning combo of well-assembled efficiency and frisky motoring. The 200hp FSI engine is plenty powerful, while offering good chassis balance due to reduced weight vis-a-vis the VR6. Coupled with the pre-selector DSG gearbox, you can really wring this thing out while feeling like a racecar driver. We love the nods to the original badass GTI like the red stripe around the grille and the plaid cloth for the seats. The GTI was one of the bright spots in a dark automotive age, and this latest version channels that ethos in the best of ways. Not bad for a buy-in starting at about $23K.

FourWord: A Crate Idea for Audi

by George Achorn

There’s a friendly sense of rivalry around the office here at Vortex Media Group. I can’t say that if I meet my counterpart Bryan Joslin who runs our BMW website Mwerks.com on the way to the watercooler, that it’s a race or anything…. but bring up competitive topics like the debate of “M5 vs. S6” and you’re likely to hear a spirited conversation. As with any competition, sometimes you come out on top and sometimes you don’t, and it was with just a little bit of envy that I heard the announcement from BMW of their creation of a restored BMW 2002 from 100% BMW Classic parts.

Now granted, were this a debate, I could just throw the ground-up replica Auto Union racecars as a trump card to show Audi dominance, but honestly the BMW project still leaves me a bit green with envy. Rebuilding an attainable car such as a 2002 out of parts available over the counter, albeit at premium pricing, and it’s easy to see why many iconic 2002s show up at events like Washington, DC’s Deutsche Marque Concours when there’s usually only one or two equally iconic Ur-Quattros.

As the owner of Fourtitude’s Type 81 Audi 4000 quattro project, a series that has been slow-moving as parts trickle in from far-flung sources such as German Ebay, I can certainly appreciate the availability of parts obsolete… even at premium prices.

Jump from last summer’s Deutsche Marque Concours to this year’s SEMA show and you’re talking a whole other ballgame. There were no BMWs or Audis over the age of five to be seen, while American muscle cars are not just common, they’re seemingly everywhere. Rebuilding muscle cars, hot rods, and other vintage American iron is a big industry for the American Big 3. I doubt Bill Ford or Bob Lutz put much of the meal on their families’ tables based on crate engine or vintage parts sales, but the engine and parts business isn’t just Ford being good guys and supporting their heritage, it’s also a money maker.

As I walked around SEMA, this level of business got me to thinking. I knew some Audi AG executives of the highest level were also walking the show to try to determine just where Audi fits within the SEMA experience. I knew that Audi of America had charged four ad agencies shopping for the Audi account to finish the statement “Audi + America = ?”, and with an eye on SEMA and what goes on here, it's not hard to imagine some sort of tie-in for Audi of America.

SEMA being distinctly American, I began to add these things together and an idea started to take shape. Not knowing numbers, the business case, or even the legitimacy of the base leaves this idea a bit out there to be sure, but as an Audi enthusiast it’s easy to get excited about such a plan. So here it is…

FourWord: A Crate Idea for Audi

Rumor is that Audi is developing a modern 5-cylinder turbocharged FSI engine for an upcoming TTS or TT RS model. Though it’d be mounted transversely in the TT, the idea of an in-line 5, particularly one with the latest in FSI injection technology certainly draws attention at the very mention. Having heard this rumor, I’ve asked just about anyone with the four ring logo on their business card for a guage on the likelihood of such a motor. None have said no, but none have confirmed it either. Claiming ignorance with the occasional smile leads one to believe that such an engine is being considered, if not developed. Okay, we’re part-way there.

Were this engine to go into production, it could likely be Audi’s version of the Hemi. Turbocharged Audi 5-cylinder motors, particularly with rare RS2 or Sport quattro componentry, hold as much cred amongst Audi loyalists as the legendary Hemi did for Mopar freaks. If Chrysler could bring back the Hemi and sell a modern version as a crate application for vintage Mopar restorations, couldn’t Audi sell these 5-cylinder TFSI motors as crate applications for vintage Audis?

If Audi could develop a longitudinal application, or even work with an aftermarket conversion specialist in given markets like perhaps 2Bennett in the USA, to create a conversion kit for these motors, would owners of vintage Audis line up to buy it?

If mounting hardware and electronics were sorted to fit in cars where the original 5-cylinders fit, then one could easily see such motors being installed in everything from first generation 4000 and Ur Quattro models to the last of the C4 100s, B3 Coupes, sedans and Cabriolets.

FourWord: A Crate Idea for Audi

Were Audi to consider such a program, it would be a fantastic anchor for the launch of a more extensive Audi Tradition branded line of classic parts such as those offered by BMW or Mercedes-Benz. Even better, a show like SEMA might be the perfect place to debut such a program. Much like Chrysler with its seriously insane vintage Challenger and Charger booth cars, one could easily imagine a seriously built ur Quattro with Audi Tradition crate motor underneath the hood as a star attraction within any potential Audi stand.

Alas, this idea is based so heavily on rumor and on no solid information gained by reliable sources, the realist in me suggests one not get one’s hopes very high. Still, this whole concept sounds like a cool idea to us and as such we put it out there for anyone at Audi who might care to listen.

Officially Official: 2008 Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe

Officially Official: 2008 Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe

The Detroit Auto Show traditionally belongs to the domestic automakers, who pull out all the stops as they unveil some of their best and brightest new products and concepts. This year, however, the ultimate showstopper may well be located at the Rolls-Royce display. The fabled British marque (now owned by BMW, of course) has chosen Detroit to reveal the 2008 Phantom Drophead Coupe, a jaw-droppingly spectacular 4-seat convertible aimed squarely at Bentley's Azure.

The Drophead Coupe is, for all intents and purposes, a perfect production interpretation of RR's 100EX concept car, which made its debut at 2004's Geneva show. The key elements of the 100EX remain -- the thin LED headlamps, rear-opening "suicide" doors, brushed steel hood and A-pillar, and teak decking aft of the passenger compartment are all here. The V16 that powered the 100EX is replaced in the Drophead Coupe by the Phantom sedan's proven 6.75L V12., which generates 453 horsepower and 513 lb-ft of torque at 3500 rpm. That's enough to propel the 5775-pound droptop to 60 mph in approximately 5.7 seconds.

Officially Official: 2008 Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe

As one would (and should) expect, the cost of entry is substantial. Adding the Phantom Drophead Coupe to one's personal fleet will cost $407,000 plus any additional options. But what an addition it'll make. The car's hand-welded aluminum spaceframe is constructed at a BMW facility in Germany and is wrapped in all-new body panels -- nothing is shared with the big-brother sedan. The suicide doors allow the A-pillar to run uninterrupted to the floor, increasing the body's stiffness. Overall, the convertible's lines are more rounded and smooth, giving it a classically sporting look that still retains the Phantom sedan's imposing presence.

Nautical influences drove some of the decisions made with regard to the car's interior. During its development, the team headed to Southampton to inspect a J-class yacht undergoing restoration. Since the Drophead Coupe is an open-top car, it would need to be able to handle the elements, and a yacht, with its constant exposure to water, seemed like a good place to do some research.. As such, smooth, easily-wipeable seating surfaces are used (no perforated leather here), as well as carpet/floormat materials that are resistant to moisture. And let's not forget the teak decking on the hard tonneau -- that's the most obvious nautical influence of all.

Occupants sit in a sea of leather, wood and chrome, and when the weather's less than perfect, a cashmere-lined 5-layer roof protects them from the elements. Rolls-Royce says that this is the largest fabric roof used on a modern convertible -- a bragging right that could be challenged if Mercedes decides to bring out a production version of its Ocean Drive concept. We'd be remiss if we didn't mention the car's trunk, or "picnic boot" as Rolls-Royce calls it, which has a split opening. In addition to the traditional trunklid, there's a folding tailgate which acts as a bench capable of supporting 330 lbs.

Big, bold, and sublime, the Phantom Drophead Coupe is Rolls-Royce's halo car. Yes, the company maintains that the Phantom sedan is the standard-bearer, but this is better -- much better, in our opinion -- appealing to the romantic in all of us in a way the sedan never will. The gauntlet has been thrown down in the ultraluxury segment. Jay Gatsby, your car is waiting...

We'll bring you more on the Drophead Coupe when We see it in person in a little over a week.

PRESS RELEASE / TECH SPECS:

ROLLS-ROYCE LAUNCHES PHANTOM DROPHEAD COUPÉ AT DETROIT

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars will unveil its new Phantom Drophead Coupé at the Detroit Motor Show on Sunday 7 January. Production of the new car will start at Goodwood in the summer of 2007.

The two-door, four-seat convertible is a less formal interpretation of classic Rolls-Royce design. Using the lightweight rigidity of an all-aluminium spaceframe, it marries modern technology to a sleek, streamlined convertible body.

Its exterior lines echo the timeless styling of the great Rolls-Royce cars: a long bonnet, large-diameter wheels, short front and long rear overhangs and the quintessential dynamic line descending along its flanks. Inside, the design emphasises the airy openness of top-down motoring, embracing the elements and creating a stunning, social environment.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Chief Designer, Ian Cameron, said, "This car gave us the chance to think about the very nature of convertible motoring and in particular what it means to Rolls-Royce. Above all we were determined to make this car a joy to live with and engineered it to give years of effortless service to its owner."

A number of features first seen on 100EX, the experimental convertible shown by Rolls-Royce in 2004, have been engineered into the new Phantom Drophead Coupé. Two of the most visually striking of these are the brushed steel bonnet and A-pillar and the teak decking for the rear hood cover. The brushed steel is machine finished to give a uniform grain before undergoing extensive hand polishing to achieve a perfect sheen. At the rear, the teak decking is treated with a carefully blended mix of oils to preserve a natural finish and a long lasting lustre that is as beautiful as it is hardy.

Front opening coach doors have been homologated for the new car and add considerably to the ease of access to the rear seat, as well as to the overall aesthetics. Unique to Rolls-Royce, the doors dramatically transform the Phantom Drophead Coupé's looks, giving a side profile reminiscent of classic sports cars of the '60s. Crucially, they also aid the overall stiffness of the body as the rear hinged doors allow for an uninterrupted A-pillar. Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupé

INTRODUCTION
In 2004, Rolls-Royce unveiled 100EX, a striking experimental drophead built to celebrate 100 years of arguably the most famous automotive brand in the world. Built without compromise, it encapsulated a century of elegance and engineering, and, in an instant, defined the future direction of the brand.

In its two world tours, 100EX garnered positive comments from customers and the media alike. Such was the strength of the reaction that, in the autumn of 2005, Rolls-Royce announced that a production version would be available by 2007. In the interim years, the team at Goodwood have worked tirelessly to turn the experimental car into a reality.

Launched at the Detroit Motor Show 2006, the Phantom Drophead Coupé is the second new model from Rolls-Royce since BMW Group became custodian of the marque in 1998.

The Phantom Drophead Coupé has been carefully crafted to be aesthetically pleasing, yet practical too. Wood, leather, chrome and brushed steel have been used where most appropriate. Form and function have equal billing. The simplicity of the design belies a car built to provide years of effortless service.

The Phantom Drophead Coupé offers owners an unparalleled convertible experience, combining compelling driveability with exceptional engineering, technology and design – hand-crafted from the finest materials to an exceptional level of quality.

DESIGN
From the outset, the design team at Goodwood were adamant that the Phantom Drophead Coupé should be more than simply a convertible version of the Phantom. "Designing without compromise meant that, to a certain extent, we had to start again," says Rolls-Royce Chief Designer Ian Cameron. "Simply removing the Phantom's roof could have made a great convertible but it wouldn't have made a perfect one. With the Phantom Drophead Coupé we had the chance to think about the very nature of convertible motoring and, in particular, what it means to Rolls-Royce."

Every exterior panel on the Phantom Drophead Coupé is new, echoing the Phantom's style but with carefully considered proportions more suited to the shorter body. From the raked front end to the sweeping rear, every aspect was studied at length to ensure that the finished car looked purposeful and elegant both with the hood up and with it stowed. For the interior, the concept was simple: bring the outside in. Create a social space enabling occupants to embrace the elements using sumptuous, relevant materials.

As well as considering the finer details of the package – seating arrangements and dashboard layouts, for example – the designers also developed some fundamental beliefs about how the materials they were using should work. The entire team was keen to keep things as natural as possible and, as a result, there is an instant, raw beauty to the Phantom Drophead Coupé. Materials are used in a way that emphasises their natural charm and there is an immediacy to the exposed elements of brushed steel and solid teak. Bleaches, stains and lacquers were shunned as far as possible in favour of more natural finishes. Hands touch only chrome, leather or wood. Other materials, such as the brushed steel, are used as architectural detailing, giving the whole car a sense of visual tactility.

"The Phantom Drophead Coupé is about emphasising the essentials of pleasure," says Cameron. "Above all, we were determined to make this car a joy to live with. Rolls-Royce is the opposite of stiff formality. Why would you design and build a car like this and not make it fun to use?"

EXTERIOR
The profile of the Phantom Drophead Coupé is fundamentally transformed from that of a conventional four-seat convertible by the inclusion of front coach doors. Evocative of the classic sports car profile, they add considerably to the easy entry and exit of rear passengers. Perhaps just as importantly, they also add significantly to the overall strength and stiffness of the body as they allow the construction of an uninterrupted A-pillar. Newly homologated for the Phantom Drophead Coupé, these coach doors are unique to Rolls-Royce.

At the front sits a new, more rakish grille, giving the car a more casual air while retaining its classic looks. Finished in steel, the centre fins are polished while the surround is brushed to match the optional brushed steel bonnet and A-pillar. The grille is hinged at the top in order to give way in the event of a low-speed impact. On top sits the Spirit of Ecstasy, remodelled using advanced computer software. These days she has a more lifelike appearance, with clear definition of her features. Finished in stainless steel, the Spirit of Ecstasy is also available in silver or gold via the Bespoke programme at Goodwood.

The front end of the Phantom Drophead Coupé is more streamlined than that of previous Rolls-Royce cars. Slim front LED side lights sit above larger round driving lamps. The front bumper is integrated into the design, further softening the look. A discreet camera nestles underneath the numberplate to provide an excellent split-screen view of the road ahead, via the on-board monitor, to help when parking or when pulling out of a side road.

One of the best visual clues to the Phantom Drophead Coupé's character can be found at the rear. The picnic boot is the very essence of automotive affability. The only type of its kind on any convertible, it offers easy access to the luggage compartment as well as providing comfortable outdoor seating for two adults. The substantial hinges are able to accommodate a weight of 150 kg / 330 lb. Inside the boot, 315 litres / 11.1 cu ft of space is enough to house three sets of golf clubs. Importantly, this space remains intact whether the hood is raised or lowered.

An entirely new palette of nine exterior colours has been developed for the Phantom Drophead Coupé: Metropolitan Blue, Admiral Blue, Jubilee Silver, Diamond Black, Duck Egg Blue, Semaphore Yellow, English White, Woodland Green and Ensign Red. These are complimented with hood colours in Silver, Black, Beige, Navy Blue, Deep Red and Deep Green.

Two of the most visually stunning options are the teak decking for the rear hood cover and the brushed steel bonnet and A-pillar. First seen on the 100EX experimental car in 2004, these are signature elements of the Phantom Drophead Coupé look. The brushed finish of the bonnet and A-pillar apes the classic Phantoms of the '20s and '30s but with a delightful 21st century twist.

The rear teak decking epitomises the careful design and attention to detail seen throughout the Phantom Drophead Coupé. It is as functional as it is beautiful. Teak was used because of its inherently hardy properties and its resistance to moisture and decay. Special techniques were developed in the Rolls-Royce wood shop to preserve the appearance of a fresh, unprocessed finish, the aim being to have a final deck that was as close to natural timber as possible. "We wanted it to look as if it had been cut and hand-finished 10 minutes ago," said Alan Sheppard, Chief Interior Designer. More than 30 individual pieces of teak go into each deck, protected by a specially formulated blend of oils. As with all the woods and veneers used by Rolls-Royce, it is sourced from sustainable forests by a team of specialists.

The hood is the largest of any modern convertible. Its acoustic insulation is exemplary, with five layers of insulation material between occupants and the outside world. Lined with a cashmere blend, the structure is more like a bespoke suit than a traditional fabric roof. Rolls-Royce was keen to use a fabric roof rather than a folding hard-top for many reasons, not least aesthetics. As Ian Cameron describes, "There is nothing more romantic than driving a convertible in the rain at night and hearing the drops hit the roof. In conversation with our customers we realised that they felt the same way." A further benefit of the tailored, soft-top roof is the relatively small space required to stow it.

INTERIOR
The interior concept revolves around the idea of an indoor/outdoor space: an all-weather passenger compartment that combines the practicality required for convertible motoring with the sumptuous elegance expected of Rolls-Royce. Rather than take inspiration solely from the automotive world, Chief Interior Designer Alan Shepherd looked elsewhere. "In 2004, when we were designing 100EX, we visited a boatyard in Southampton where one of the famous 1930s America's Cup J-class yachts was being restored. We were struck by the variety and uses of different materials throughout. All of the J-class yachts have a tremendous sense of purposeful elegance about them, and this was something that we were keen to emulate."

The Phantom Drophead Coupé has been designed as a car in which to enjoy the elements. The all-weather surfaces of the interior have been designed to take what nature can throw at them. "We didn't want owners to feel as if they had to pull over at the first spot of rain," says Cameron. To this end, a number of notable features can be seen throughout the interior. Firstly, the seats have no ridges in them, giving a smooth surface so that moisture can be wiped straight off. In place of traditional floor mats, wholly more practical sisal mats are used. Even the carpet itself employs 21st century materials designed to deal with the moisture and humidity encountered in many areas of the world.

Yikes-O-Rama! Is Bugatti Planning a 1,200hp Veyron?

We found this via the German Car Blog with no attribution to the original article, so we can't vouch for its veracity, but according to the story they quote, Bugatti is working on a boosted sport version of the Veyron with 1,200hp. Again, as far as we're concerned this is a pure, unsubstantiated rumor at this point. It runs somewhat contrary to the rumors that've been flying around the VW unit, including that it may be shuttered. Sporty FT-FS Hybrid from Toyota

Sporty FT-FS Hybrid from Toyota

Many of my (car-crazed) co-workers are waiting for a high-performance Hybrid car. BMW has shown that it’s possible to build a fast car that uses alternate energy like Hydrogen, but Toyota has taken the approach of using the widely available Hybrid technology. While most people associate Hybrid cars with asthmatic performance, this FT-FS could have as much as 400hp and go from 0 to 60mph in 4 seconds. Sounds great, but why does it have to be so ugly?

Baby Benz B: Coming to America?

Baby Benz B: Coming to America?

It's no great revelation that Mercedes-Benz has long projected itself as a premium automotive brand in the United States, where the three-pointed star is recognized as a badge of luxury. The American market has also been a driving force in Mercedes' development and marketing of large, gas-guzzling sport-utility vehicles. The same can't be said for overseas markets, where Mercedes offers small cars (as well as commercial vehicles), and where Benz taxicabs are a common sight.

But according to the latest reports, DaimlerChrysler's approach towards the American market may see a change as the demand for smaller, more fuel-efficient cars increases. Currently, the C-Class holds up the bottom of the US range for Mercedes; Canadian buyers can buy the B-Class; and overseas the A-Class is offered a notch above the Smart ForTwo.

Having already introduced the B in Canada, bringing it southward into the United States would be a logical move. It's undoubtedly a delicate move for Mercedes as the company tries to gain market share as demands shift, all the while trying to avoid over-diluting the brand.

2007 Lincoln MKR Concept

2007 Lincoln MKR Concept

The Lincoln MKR Concept is poised for a Detroit introduction - and now, here's what you'll be looking at in January -- and seeing in a showroom sometime in 2008.

While the official release from Ford had been held under embargo, some publications were granted exclusives on the release prior to the Detroit auto show in January . So like them, we're going to bring you the information early - and bring you more pictures as we can obtain them.

Though it's officially no more than a concept vehicle, the prototype is very likely to show up in production form before decade's end, albeit a bit less radical than the prototype. One of the more notable features of the show car is its all-glass roof with a Lincoln badge etched in. A more conventional roof, albeit with an oversized Panorama roof would be more likely in production.

2007 Lincoln MKR ConceptThe outline of the Lincoln badge can also be found designed into the distinctive brake and gas pedals.

What design chief Peter Horbury calls the "ultimate" Lincoln would go to rear-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations, something that would make for a much more competitive entry. Under the hood of the show car is one of the most over-the-top engine layouts seen since the era of the muscle car. The prototype features a 3.5-liter twin turbo V-6, the new Ford TwinForce, which makes 415 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. The TwinForce, Ford promises, will deliver V-8 power with markedly better fuel economy.

Overall, the look displays Lincoln 's new design theme. It's notably more curvaceous than the slab-sided theme the brand was experimenting with in recent years, but it also harkens back to some distinctive Lincoln heritage cues, such as the double-wing grille and high beltline.

The MKR sits on a 112.9-inch wheelbase and, at least in show car trim, is shod in 21-inch wheels and tires, with well-displayed Brembo brakes.

Don't be surprised to see a production version of this sedan hit Lincoln showrooms for the 2009 model-year.

Mercedes registers CLC-Class name

Mercedes registers CLC-Class name

Despite the spy shots we see now and then, carmakers often manage to keep a tight lid on some of the projects they're working on, only giving us the occasional glimpse. Their cover is at least partially blown at times when they file for a trademark on a name. Once they've filed, the name is published for opposition, in case a competitor is already using it, giving us a chance to guess at what they might be up to.

Mercedes-Benz, it's been revealed, has filed for a trademark for the name CLC-Class. Based on their formulaic nomenclature, speculation has ensued over what that could be. One possibility bouncing around is a two-door version of the current CLS four-door coupe. Another is a convertible version of the CL, the two-door version of the S-Class sedan. While it'd seem an unlikely name to use for this application, DaimlerChrysler may have taken the name to use should they green-light the Ocean Drive concept (pictured) we'll be seeing in a couple weeks' time in Detroit.

Of course we have to take this all with a large grain of salt, remembering that just because a large company like DCX has filed for a trademark on a name doesn't necessarily mean they'll be using it on a production automobile. Interesting, though, that along with the Class 012 trademark for automobiles, Mercedes has also filed a Class 028 trademark for toy model vehicles on the CLC-Class name.

Toyota Closes In on Number One

Toyota Closes In on Number One

Toyota has outlined plans to sell as many as 9.34 million vehicles in 2007, which, if it follows through, would allow it to surpass General Motors as the world's largest automaker.

The new goal comes amid growing signs of the Japanese automaker's continuing success. Toyota surpassed Ford Motor Co. as the world's second largest automaker in annual global vehicle sales in 2003. Ford now expects Toyota to pass it in North American sales in 2007 as well.

Toyota said it sold 8.13 million vehicles worldwide in 2005, and is set to sell about 8.85 million vehicles this year, including sales from subsidiaries truck maker Hino Motors and Daihatsu Motor Co., which makes small cars. Toyota's profit also grew 39 percent in its fiscal first quarter, which ended June 30, to $3.1 billion.

Toyota President Katsuaki Watanabe declined to give a vehicle production target for 2008 but said the number may be slightly higher than the sales figure. "We are aiming for steady growth through strengthening all our operations,'' Watanabe told reporters.

Watanabe also said, in another challenge to competitors struggling to match Toyota's ambitious product plans, that his company would hire 8000 additional engineers worldwide by 2010.

The largest gain in vehicle sales in coming years will come from Asia outside Japan, including China, and they will also continue to grow in North America and Europe, although less dramatically, according to Toyota executives. Vehicle sales in Japan will stay flat, they said.
The ambitious plans in China and the rest of Asia also mean that Toyota now is exposed to more risk if China's economy slows or the military coup in Thailand triggers political unrest, Watanabe said.

Nevertheless, analysts said after the company's press conference that Toyota has clearly benefited from soaring oil prices, which have prompted drivers turn to fuel-efficient cars. Toyota models have a reputation for delivering impressive fuel economy. The Prius hybrid is now so popular its sales have nearly surpassed the tax credit quota set by the U.S. Congress.

Mulally has 'secret war room' within Ford

Mulally has 'secret war room' within Ford

If history serves them right, taking Alan Mulally's advice to "follow me" should be looked at as an opportunity by Ford brass, even when it involves a walk out of the boardroom and down a flight of steps in to his secret "war room".

Insiders are talking about the room, buried deep within the confines of Ford's world headquarters in Dearborn, that has walls covered with charts, graphs and lists of Ford products and markets that define the road to turn the troubled automaker around.

The recently-appointed CEO also points out that he feels some really good people will leave the company during these gut-wrenching times, but for those who stay the ride back up will be infinitely more exhilarating.

Mullaly may begin to lay out his plans as early as the North American International Auto Show in Detroit next month. Let's hope Ford is ready to battle its way back.

NEW 2007 Ford Shelby GT begins Production, First Car to be auctioned @ Barrett-Jackson

NEW 2007 Ford Shelby GT begins Production, First Car to be auctioned @ Barrett-Jackson

The new Ford Shelby GT is the third model in the modern Shelby Mustang portfolio, joining the 500-horsepower Ford Shelby GT500 and Hertz rental special, Shelby GT-H.

The 2007 Ford Shelby GT will be priced a starting MSRP of $36,970.

The first production-built Shelby GT, CSM No. 07SGT0001 will go over the auction block in support of the Carroll Shelby Children’s Foundation at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Collector Car Event on Saturday, January 20th.

Ford Shelby Mustangs have proven extremely desirable: The first publicly available Shelby GT500 sold for $600,000 in January 2006, the first Shelby GT-H sold to the public commanded $250,000 in late July, and Shelby GT-Hs coming off Hertz rental duty are selling for $68,000-$90,000 at auction.

LAS VEGAS, Dec.22, 2006 – The first Ford Shelby GT CSM No. 07SGT0001 will fire up its engine and drive out of the Shelby Automobiles build center in Las Vegas in celebration of the start of production of the third model in the modern Ford Shelby Mustang portfolio. The Shelby GT features a 4.6-liter V-8, classic Shelby design cues, and performance modifications and will be priced at $36,970 MSRP including applicable taxes and destination and delivery.

“I couldn’t be more excited to see production up and running on a new Shelby Mustang,” says Carroll Shelby, CEO and Chairman of Shelby Automobiles, Inc. “The new Shelby GT is a great addition to the Shelby GT500 and Shelby GT-H, and it will only further the lead that Mustang has in the coming muscle car wars.”

The Shelby GT is the third modern Shelby Mustang produced through a collaboration of Ford and Carroll Shelby. In addition to the 2007 Shelby GT500, Ford and Shelby created 500 copies of the Ford Shelby GT-H, which are available to rent through select Hertz rental centers.

The Shelby GT joining the Ford line-up is the result of customers and dealers demanding a retail version of the Shelby GT-H. Ford and Shelby Automobiles were able to capitalize on much of the development work that was done on the Shelby GT-H, and put together a ‘Go Fast’ production program delivering the Shelby GT in six months.

“The Shelby GT500 has been a huge success, but we have been overwhelmed at the number of people who want to buy a retail version of the Shelby GT-H,” continues Shelby. “The Shelby GT will perfectly compliment the GT500, just like the original GT350 and GT500 did back in the 60’s.”

Be first on the block to own the new small-block Shelby
The first production unit of the Shelby GT will be auctioned off to support the Carroll Shelby Children’s Foundation charity at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Collector Car Event in January 2007. Classic Shelby Mustangs have always been a crowd favorite at Barrett-Jackson auctions, pushing muscle car prices to new heights, and the modern Shelby Mustangs have proven to be no different.

In January this year, an early production Shelby 2007 GT500 sold at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction for $600,000, with proceeds benefiting the Carroll Shelby Children’s Foundation. On July 28, a Shelby GT-H was sold for $250,000 at EAA AirVenture, with proceeds benefiting the Youth Eagles aviation education program. Now, some of the first Shelby GT-Hs are exiting the Hertz rental fleet and going to private auction where they are consistently averaging between $68,000-$90,000 in sale.

Shelby-inspired performance, proven by Ford Racing
Under the hood, the Ford Racing Power Pack includes a 90 millimeter cold-air intake and a new performance engine calibration for improved response. The high-flow exhaust system with X-pipe crossover offers better power delivery and a throaty V-8 exhaust note. A shorter 3.55:1 rear-axle ratio is installed to capitalize on the Shelby GT coupe’s extra power when accelerating off the line. For Shelby GT models equipped with a manual transmission, a Hurst short-throw shifter is installed for more precise shift action.

The Shelby GT driving dynamics are fine tuned with the Ford Racing Handling Pack, which was developed by the same engineers that developed the Ford Racing FR500C, which won the 2005 Grand-Am Cup Championship. New coil springs drop the overall ride height by an inch-and-a-half for a more aggressive stance and lower center of gravity. Stiffer dampers and front swaybar further enhance cornering feel and body control. To showcase the key performance modifications, Ford Racing painted all the key suspension components, including the damper, spring, and swaybar Ford Racing Blue.

A front strut-tower brace adds additional strength to the chassis structure, and P235/55ZR18 high-performance tires maximize the benefits of the chassis upgrades.

Shelby GT models will begin as a stock Mustang GT assembled at AutoAlliance International assembly plant in Flat Rock, Mich. The cars are then shipped to the Shelby Automobiles facility in Las Vegas for modification before delivery to Ford dealerships.

LED Lights for the NEW Audi R8

LED Lights for the NEW Audi R8

Festive lighting is all around us, but some sources are much more unusual than others. Car maker Audi, for example, has used LED illumination to spectacular effect in its new R8 sports car, which will not only pierce the night sky with a total of 24 front-mounted LED driving lamps and 186 LED brake lights, but will also shed light on a component that is rarely visible – the engine.

Due to be launched by the Vorsprung durch Technik brand next spring priced from £76,725, the 187mph 2-seater is available with an optional interior light package that not only includes Light Emitting Diode (LED) cabin illumination, but also bathes the engine compartment in LED light, drawing onlookers’ attention to its powerful eight cylinder unit through its clear glass ‘bonnet’.

On the outside, the 24 LEDs also conspire to create a remarkably distinctive and immediately recognisable front view. Inspired by the design of the Sydney Opera House, the R8’s head lamp units incorporate 12 LED daytime running lights on each side that follow their pronounced curves. Combined with bi-xenon dipped and main beam head lights, and a total of 186 LED tail lights, they will not only give the R8 maximum road presence, but will also enhance safety for the driver and surrounding road users. LED Lights for the NEW Audi R8

Audi UK Director Jeremy Hicks commented: “The importance of seeing and being seen on the roads is obviously brought into sharp focus at this time of year, and with its new LED technology our new R8 will be pretty hard to beat on both fronts. With the help of Audi innovations such as the quattro four-wheel-drive system we have always strived to deliver high performance as responsibly and safely as possible, and this hugely impressive lighting technology underlines that fact yet again.”

Customer deposits for the new Audi R8 have been taken by the UK Audi Centre network since its world public debut at the 2006 Mondial de l’Automobile in Paris in late September, and these have already accounted for all right-hand-drive production slots allocated right through to mid-2008.

2002 Nissan Skyline GT-R V-spec II

By Frank Filipponio

Although the car pictured in these photos was never officially imported into the States, any auto enthusiast worth his salt will be able to tell you what it is. Whether from Gran Turismo or Project Gotham Racing, the Skyline GT-R should be instantly recog2002 Nissan Skyline GT-R V-spec IInizable to gamers. Some may even recall the racing victories these cars racked up overseas. But Americans were never able to walk into a showroom and buy one for themselves. The Skylines, perhaps because of this forbidden fruit quality have achieved such a mythic level of admiration that seeing one on these shores can make semi-grown men weep.
For those that might need a refresher course in all things Skyline, a brief recap beginning on the track. The earliest predecessor of the GT-R, the S54 2000 GT-B, finished second in its first race in 1964, behind only the Porsche 904 GTS race car. It went on to garner its fair share of wins. So Skylines have had a long association with racing and the winner’s circle. The subject of our feature, the brutally fast GT-R model, debuted in 1989 to compete in the Japan Touring Car (JTC) Group A racing series. The GT-R won every race it entered for 4 straight years with a record of 29 wins out of 29 races. By 1994 this dominance earned the Skyline its own racing class, the Japan GT car (JGTC) series.
During that time the GT-Rs were also run around Europe. The 1991 24 hours of Nьrburgring marked the first time a Skyline GT-R was entered officially and it won the Group N class. Later that year at the Spa Francorchamps 24-hour endurance race, the GT-R did even better, winning overall, in the process beating the more powerful Group A and Group N1 cars. Back at home the Skyline’s dominance was overwhelming. From 1991 -1997 the GT-R was undefeated in N1 endurance racing with 50 wins. And those wins translated into a lot of demand in Nissan showrooms.

2002 Nissan Skyline GT-R V-spec IIWhen it debuted in 1989, the Nissan Skyline GT-R was dubbed "Godzilla" by Wheels magazine in Australia, and the nickname stuck. It was outlandish and powerful and so very Japanese. It provided performance and handling to rival Porsches and Ferraris, at a considerably lower price. In Japan the Skyline's closest competitors were the NSX, Supra, and RX-7, and later the EVO and WRX STi. None of these had that certain something that set the GT-R apart. From 1989 -1999 there were 3 models of Skyline GT-R produced - the R32, R33, and the R34. Each featured the RB26DETT engine, ATTESA E-TS all-wheel- drive system, and Nissan's Super HICAS four-wheel-steering system.
The engine in all but a few GT-Rs was a 2.6-liter, dohc, 24-valve, inline-6 with twin lightweight steel/ceramic turbos, and an intercooler pushing it to produce 276 hp @ 6800 rpm in stock trim, but capable of handling over 600 hp without internal modifications.

The ATTESA E-TS system is a big part of what makes the GT-R special. It is an ultra-sophisticated, electronically-controlled, all-wheel- drive system. Under normal conditions the car is essentially rear- wheel-drive, but when the computer senses a need, it automatically sends up to half of the torque to the front wheels. The Pro version of this system, available on the R33 and R34, includes a more aggressive computer map and an electronically-controlled, limited- slip differential in the rear end.
The Super HICAS system, activated when the vehicle reached 80 km/h, controlled steering of the rear wheels in the same direction as the fronts to improve turn-in on entry into corners. Pretty impressive stuff today, let alone for 17 years ago. Improvements were made over the years and new features added. Special editions were common as well: V-Spec, V-Spec II, and our feature car, the V-Spec II Nьr.
The R34 Nissan Skyline GT-R V-spec II, besides requiring a wider rear decklid to fit all those letters, featured a carbon-fiber hood with a NACA duct and bigger rear brakes. The Nьr variant (named after the famed Nьrburgring circuit) was basically a GT-R V-spec II with a more powerful N1 race-spec crate motor, larger drilled front brake discs, different rims, a different wing and a unique color scheme.
Even though our feature car is not an actual V-Spec II Nьr, it is very close. The only visual thing it is missing is the carbon fiber hood. And one of those is on its way from Japan. The engine is also supposed to be an N1 block, but this particular R34 sports a modified engine that has MORE power than the N1. A custom Nismo exhaust, the most expensive custom coil over shocks made by Quantum, and a full Nismo aero package round out the mods. It all adds up to one exhilarating ride.
Having sampled this beast’s bad behavior first hand, I can tell you that some Italian and German car owners are lucky Godzilla never officially visited America. This car’s movements are something of a Frankenstein hybrid of Gallardo and Noble, with some Lexus thrown in for good measure. Fast and grippy, with wonderful whooshes and pops from the turbocharged 2.6-liter straight-six under the hood. The car grips like PoliGrip® but still manages to soak up bumps with ease. A balance only the Germans have seemed to be able to achieve in most of their cars.
Acceleration is quick and provides all the right emotional appeal once you get used to shifting with the wrong hand. You’ll miss the upshift to second more times than you can imagine before you finally get used to the right-hand-drive peculiarity. Heck, you’ll walk to the passenger side of the car for months before you master that part of the equation. Most embarrassing are the times you actually get 2002 Nissan Skyline GT-R V-spec IIin and buckle up before realizing some wise guy has moved the steering wheel to the other side.
The brakes feel strong and well-modulated. Throttle and steering response are like a race car. The Skyline has a certain heft to it that makes it feel a tad bit portly, but its all-wheel-drive claws the pavement and sticks well beyond what you’d imagine possible, not unlike the baby Lambo. The turbo wastegate pops and ensuing whoosh sound just like the M12 GTO 3R, and the shove in the back makes you realize this isn’t any ordinary sports coupe. The cabin is well- appointed and pretty quiet considering the performance potential and wouldn’t look out of place in an IS350. It amounts to a unique driving experience that manages to blend these disparate systems into a smooth performance machine.

Not as raw as a Challenge Stradale or as polished as a 997S, the Skyline GT-R offers similar performance in a totally different flavor. Some would surely prefer the security of having a dealer network to back their performance machine’s needs, but that is part of the Skyline’s appeal. Daring to be different. Not following the crowd. Throwing your weight around, shooting flames and roaring out loud feels good sometimes and Nissan’s own Godzilla fits that bill perfectly.

Mercedes-Benz CLR 600 Concept

Mercedes-Benz CLR 600 Concept

Aproposal for a futuristic Mercedes-Benz muscle car, with an aggressive look and a 600-hp engine tuned by AMG. The author is Mark Hsieh, a graduate in Automotive Design from Coventry University.

We find this concept particularly interesting because it reinterprets the Mercedes-Benz brand image in an original way, with a front-end design that reminds of the past and an overall aggressive look that builds on the values expressed by the current CLS model and aims at competing against future US-made muscle cars.

The Design

The concept is a race version of future Mercedes-Benz, called CLR, with a 5.6 liter V8 unit tuned by AMG to get a 600bhp performance. Mercedes-Benz CLR 600 Concept

As Mark Hsieh explains, "The overall styling hints M-Benz will look more sinister in the near future according to the current CLS styling."

"The long, slender bonnet which accommodates the monstrous V8 is thought to be the symbol of class muscle car.

"Therefore the front wheel arch was given an agressive thrust in order to echo the bonnet in an old school way."

The design of the front face is simple yet clear, accentuating the Mercedes badge, again in an old school way. This is the new interpretation of the new era Mercedes.

"To sum up, this rendering could give a glimpse to both Mercedes designers and customers of what they could try and expect in the next few years!"

2007 Hamann Ferrari 599 GTB

2007 Hamann Ferrari 599 GT

The 599 GTB Fiorano is Ferrari's most powerful front-engine road car ever produced. With the 599, Ferrari hoped to create the ultimate high-performance GT with the ultimate in driving pleasure, luxury and technology with a roomy and comfortable cabin. Other unique features of the car include a new F1-Superfast gearbox that reduces shift times to 100 ms and a Formula 1-inspired suspension system. The performance results of the 599 GTB speak for themselves - 0 to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 205 mph.

2007 Hamann Ferrari 599 GTB

Hamann has decided to take the 599 GTB Fiorano one step further with a conservative tuning package to those owners wanting an even more exclusive car. Hamann leaves the 6.0-liter V12 alone and provides exterior enhancements only in the form of a chin spoiler, side skirts, dual rear wings, a new rear diffuser. and 21-inch wheels.

ART Tuning takes on the CLS350

ART Tuning takes on the CLS350

While we can't say that the stripes and double chin spoiler are our cup of tea, this DTM wannabe CLS by ART Tuning is pretty hot otherwise. Starting with the CLS 350, the ART GTR 374 adds a supercharger and a few exhaust mods to bring horsepower up to 374, naturally. A lowered ride height, courtesy of the ART sport suspension, and upgraded 20" rolling stock complete the mechanical changes.

But the body kit is what makes this CLS stand out. The CLS is a pretty slick sedan to begin with, so the DTM vent flares and giant rear wing seem a little odd at first. But thinking of this as a CLS-DTM makes it seem perfectly logical. We'd say ditch the stripes that scream pony car, and make sure every one of these leaves the shop in silver or black. Maybe matte. Click the read link for a full rundown of the new parts on this ART project, as well as several more full size photos.

Original Dodge Firearrow concepts to be auctioned

Original Dodge Firearrow concepts to be auctioned

December 19, 2006 The only two Dodge Firearrow convertible s in the world will be going under the hammer in mid-January, giving someone a unique opportunity to own a piece of history. In an effort to create consumer excitement during 1953 and 1954, Chrysler produced four cars under the Dodge nameplate, naming them Firearrows. Each penned by Virgil Exner, the dream cars were built in a series from Firearrow I to Firearrow IV. Barrett-Jackson will feature the Firearrow II and IV models, representing the instrumental progression of the classic concept vehicle. This reprint from Special Interest Autos has the full story on the Firearrows and how they eventually went into very limited production as America's first four passenger sports car, the Dual Ghia. In their day, they were very sought after, with owners including Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Debbie Reynolds and big band leader Hoagy Carmichael. One of the original four Firearrows was used by stuntperson and model Betty Skelton to set a Women’s Closed-Course World Speed Record of 143.44 mph in 1954, so you can rest assured that the Firearrows won't get left behind at the traffic lights.

The soft yellow Firearrow II roadster was built on a shortened Dodge chassis; the car’s elegant styling is tasteful and European in flavor. The beautiful red Firearrow IV, the last car of the series, is a two place convertible with roll-up windows, a folding top, rear jump seat, radio, heater and full instrumentation.

“Both cars handle beautifully and are capable of long distance touring if desired,” stated Sam Mann, owner of the Firearrows. “Along with their drivability, the cars are as sleek and stylish as they were when they were built, earning them significant show honors at Meadowbrook and the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance.”

Failing to reach full approval from the manufacturer, the Firearrow was never placed into production and most concept cars were later destroyed, adding to the rarity of these two cars.

“Originally created to compete with the Thunderbird and Corvette, the Firearrow has become a significant piece of automotive history,” said Craig Jackson, president of the Barrett-Jackson Auction Company. “This prized pair of cars would be the centerpiece of any collection. It’s a once in a lifetime chance to own a significant piece of automotive history.”

The award-winning convertibles will be auctioned back to back during the Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Event from January 13-21, 2007, in Scottsdale, Arizona.

“It’s an honor to offer these classic and highly coveted vehicles at this year’s Scottsdale event,” added Jackson. “Bidders will have the opportunity to take home two of the rarest cars in the world, which represent the golden era of the concept car.”

Audi Abt AS7-R and Abt AS7 - Abt Sportsline Delivers the Perfect SUV

Audi Abt AS7-R and Abt AS7 - Abt Sportsline Delivers the Perfect SUV

As is customary for Abt, the “R” in AS7-R stands for “Racing”. And of course the vehicle based on the Q7 is a true racer. The top speed surges to approximately 260 km/h – a value that is not only impressive in the segment of the SUVs. Equipped with a supercharger, the 4.2 ltr V8 model becomes a husky performer. In comparison to the serial model, Abt has boosted the power of the AS7-R by awe-inspiring additional 150 HP. Now mighty 500 horses drive the heavyweight and manage the spring from zero to 100 km/h I just 5.9 seconds. The AS7-R is not only an extreme sports car, it is lordly, too. The front spoiler lip and fender extensions are painted in striking matt chrome; the other body parts are matt black. The extravagant as well as discreet look is continued in the car interior. The Abt designer team from Kempten has created a high-quality concept for the luxury SUV with a leather interior package and a multimedia system developed by Abt Sportsline’s technology partner Alpine Electronics. The exceptional Rear-Seat-Entertainment System comprises, amongst others, 10-inch monitors integrated in the front seats, DVD-changer for six discs, tuner, iPod, DVB-T tuner and a Playstation 2. Handling is simple – and, of course, perfected to detail; just what you would expect of an Abt car.Audi Abt AS7-R and Abt AS7 - Abt Sportsline Delivers the Perfect SUV

In addition to the SUV “R” model, Abt also offers body styling and suspension parts for the other Q7 models. The team from Kempten has also developed a power boost for the 3.0 TDI engine. The Abt AS7 delivers impressive good looks and highlights the vehicle’s character. And this all-wheel-drive car is all but lame because Abt Sportsline has increased the 3.0 TDI engine’s power by 39 HP to as much as 272 HP. What makes the Diesel engine so special is the enormous drive. The serial Q7 from Ingolstadt already has a torque of 500 Nm, whereas the Abt version, in contrast, performs with a torque of 550Nm. Like the AS7-R, also the AS7 was upgraded with special designer elements. Fender extensions and rear wing make the Q7 look even more powerful and present on the road. 22-inch AR wheels highlight the long sides of the SUV and accentuate its design. Abt Sportsline has succeeded in enhancing the Q7 without changing much of its character. Quite the contrary: The AS7-R and the AS7 prove that the team from Kempten has managed to emphasize a vehicle’s character even more.

Small Recall: 160 Toyota Camry Solara Coupes called back

Toyota

There's no easy way to say this. Toyota isn't perfect. We know what you're thinking. Surely we jest (Prepare for heavy sarcasm - Ed.). Everybody in the whole wide world knows that Toyota can do no wrong. We elitist journalists proclaim their magnificence at every opportunity and are quick to defend them when there is even a suggestion of something going amiss. Conversely we never miss an opportunity to criticize the domestics for their shoddy workmanship, misguided management, and lackluster performance. So how could we possibly post something as shocking as a Toyota recall? Simple. It is newsworthy, just like all the other articles we run. Including all the ones about Japanese recalls. Look 'em up.

Sorry to editorialize when trying to point out that we don't editorialize in our story selection, but hopefully you get the point. Readers pick up on elements of different stories and add their own biases and predispositions to our own, and often turn a perfectly innocent post into a raging debate on the relative merits of imports vs. domestics, cars vs. trucks, blue vs. red, boxers vs. briefs, whatever. Anyway, here's the story.

Toyota is recalling 160 MY 2007 Camry Solara coupes for a potential side airbag problem. It is believed that a tether may have been twisted when installed in the A-pillars. The thinking is that portion of the curtain bag might not deploy as intended because of the twisted tether. No accidents or injuries have been reported in regards to this issue, but Toyota is recalling them to fix it anyway. It says dealers can inspect and reroute the strap in about 30 minutes. Full details after the jump.

Press Release:

December 14, 2006 – Torrance, CA - Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., will launch a voluntary Safety Recall involving 160 2007 Camry Solara coupes. The curtain side airbag (CSA) front tether strap located in each of the front pillars may have been incorrectly routed. If the tether strap is not correctly routed, the front side of the CSA may not deploy as designed. There have been no accidents, deaths or injuries reported related to this condition.

The affected Camry Solara coupes were produced from late July 2006 to early August 2006. Toyota will mail to owners of the involved vehicles a Safety Recall notification via first class mail in late December.

Owners are requested to contact their local Toyota dealer to inspect and, if necessary, reroute the tether straps. Inspection and repair will be done at no charge to the owners of the vehicle and will take approximately 30 minutes, depending on the dealer's work schedule.

Customers with questions or concerns should contact the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331.

Chrysler Cutting Production To ‘07

Chrysler

Chrysler Group is curbing production at the company's truck and minivan plants in theU.S. and Canada for the balance of the year and into January, DaimlerChrysler officials confirmed Thursday.

Chrysler officials declined to quantify the scope of the cuts but they will lead to production halts and curbs on overtime at a truck and a minivan plant near St. Louis, Mo., as well as the minivan plant in Windsor, Ont. Plants building trucks and sport-utility vehicles --Detroit, Warren, Mich., and Newark, Del.-- also will be affected by the cutbacks.

General Motors and Ford Motor Co. had slowed down production of trucks and SUVs earlier this year but Chrysler executives had been loathe to make similar cuts until the growing inventories of unassigned vehicles led to a $1.5-billion operating loss in the third quarter. Another loss is now expected in the fourth quarter.

Tom LaSorda, Chrysler Group chief executive officer, said, "When you look at dealer inventory levels, which we reported monthly and always have, we've reduced that level from the mid-year by over 100,000 units, with the goal of being in the low 500,000 range by year-end, and I said that before and that's kind of where we're going to be," he said.

"We've got to get the business back to managing production and balancing that with what's going on at the retail level in the marketplace," LaSorda said.

Chrysler dealers have been refusing to take delivery of some vehicles pushed by the Chrysler Group in its quest for more sales. The dispute with dealers over inventories became so rancorous that the Chrysler Group's top marketing executive, Joe Eberhardt, resigned last week to operate a Mercedes-Benz dealership in the United States.

"Clearly we needed to address this issue," said LaSorda. "There was an imbalance between production and the sales rate out in the retail field, and what current inventory that the dealers carried. Obviously, this is a process that we need to review," LaSorda said.

Auto-Academics Agree: Civic Most Studied

Auto-Academics Agree: Civic Most Studied

Our sister rocks a Civic Coupe, but only because she drove a bunch of cars she thought looked cool and found it to be the "least sporty." The Loverwoman drove a MINI, a Mazda3 and our very own WRX before determining they all ride too hard for her refined tastes. We started telling her she was adopted when she was around nine months old. Still, she did research the Civic. And she cares about cars as much as we care about Mathew Perry's new TV show. Which is to say not at all. So it is no surprise that the suddenly midsize Honda world beater comes in at the #1 spot in terms of cars people think about before buying. That's a horribly clunky way of saying the Civic is the most researched car of them all. Make the jump for the top 20. Jonny Lieberman

Mercedes tipped to buy out McLaren

Mercedes tipped to buy out McLaren

Insiders are predicting that DaimlerChrysler will be buying out McLaren very soon, a move that McLaren chief Ron Dennis apparently welcomes.

Mercedes-Benz and McLaren already have very close relations. For starters, Mercedes is McLaren's engine partners in Formula One. The two also collaborated on the SLR project, which is anticipated to be followed by more supercars in the future. Mercedes also already owns forty percent of the British outfit.

The remaining sixty percent is owned by Dennis and his partner Mansour Ojjeh, but that could change in the near future. Insiders say the last remaining obstacle is fiscal timing, meaning that, literally, it's just a matter of time until Mercedes completes the buyout, which some say has already been negotiated, just not yet announced.

Given the two companies' close collaboration, we wouldn't be surprised, especially in light of the increased ownership of F1 teams by major automotive manufacturers. Honda recently bought out what was previously the BAR-Honda team. BMW took over Sauber. Renault bought out the Benetton team just a few seasons ago. Toyota has their own team, and Fiat's baby Ferrari has been running their show since the dawn of F1. The Mercedes buyout of McLaren will only be the latest such move.

iPod2Car - embed your iPod into your car stereo system

iPod2Car

The PXDP2 iPod2Car Gen 2 System lets you plumb your iPod into your car stereo system, so you get full control via the factory radio and steering wheel controls. You can even browse tracks via the radio screen. Needless to say it only works with a few makes of vehicle, but the list is growing all the time and Ford and Toyota are covered, so that’s a good sized population right there. Apparently the audio quality is excellent. Priced at around $120.00.

Full control of iPod using factory radio and steering wheel controls # Text on factory radio displays iPods browsing menus, song, artist, and elapsed time # Browse by artist, playlist, genre, and album # Controls include track forward, track back, fast forward, rewind, shuffle and repeat # Audio feed directly into the factory radio to retain digital sound quality # Charges iPods internal battery # Works with Nano, Photo, Mini, Gen3, Gen4, and Gen5 iPods

Bosch Parking Space Measurement System

Bosch Parking Space Measurement System

By Andrew Liszewski

Those new Lexus 460L sedans that can parallel park themselves are pretty cool but from what I’ve read they’re missing a key feature that Bosch is now offering as part of their own Parking Assistant option. The Bosch system already uses four ultrasound sensors on the vehicle to help drivers avoid collisions while parallel parking but now adds two additional ones for measuring the size of a prospective parking spot. I don’t care how accurate your auto-parking system is, if the car’s not gonna fit into the spot you have a problem.

With the Bosch system once an available spot is found the driver simply has to activate his turn signal so the vehicle knows what side the spot is on and then drive past at a speed of up to 20 km/h. The sensors will precisely measure the gap between the two vehicles and will let you know if the spot is big enough, a tight squeeze or too small.

The Parking Space Measurement System is currently available on the Citroen C4 Picasso but there’s no information on when other vehicles will adopt it.

FIA confirms 2007 F1 line-up

Formula 1

The roster for the 2007 Formula One season has been released by F1's international governing body, the FIA (Federation International d'Automobile). Most of the information was already known, but even after it's all been confirmed, there remain a host of question marks.

Tobacco sponsorship is on its way out, and Honda has yet to name a replacement for its outgoing title sponsor Lucky Strike. Honda's kid-sister team Super Aguri has also listed a "TBA" along with their official title of "Super Aguri F1 Team", indicating they're still searching for a title sponsor as well.

Most of the teams have confirmed their drivers' roster for next year, except for Red Bull's second team, Scuderia Toro Rosso. Although team principal Gerhard Berger has indicated that American driver Scott Speed and Italian pilot Tonio Liuzzi will both stay with the team next year, the STR submission left "TBA"s for their drivers.

Spyker, the Dutch company that has taken over the old Jordan team from Midland, has only confirmed one driver, Christijan Albers, leaving a TBA for the second. An interesting report surfaced suggesting that Spyker tried to steal GP2 champ Lewis Hamilton with an enticing long-term $10 million contract. Goes to show Spyker are serious about moving the team up-field, but we think Hamilton got a better deal with his career patrons at McLaren.

Chrysler Could Face $2B Loss

2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible

Pressure on the Chrysler Group continues to grow as the company struggles with hefty inventories and mounting losses.

DaimlerChrysler AG confirmed Friday that the Chrysler Group will offer dealers and consumers a new round of incentives to reduce inventories of unsold 2006 models despite a modest increase in sales during November.

Steven J. Landry, Chrysler vice president of sales, said that one-third of the company's current inventory of unsold vehicles are 2006 models, which he conceded is a relatively high number. In addition, the company still has several thousand "unassigned" vehicles sitting in storage, he acknowledged. Landry, however, refused to say specifically how many unassigned vehicles were still sitting on dealer lots but he stressed the company expected to eliminate the problem by the end of the year.

Meanwhile, analysts inGermany have stepped up pressure on DaimlerChrysler's supervisory board to spin off the Chrysler Group. Rumors also persist in Germany that VW's Wolfgang Bernhard is on his way back to the U.S. to take over the Chrysler Group.

The big incentives - as high as $7000 on some vehicles - coupled with high labor costs and slower-than-expected sales of new models make it very likely that the Chrysler Group will post another operating loss during the fourth quarter, analysts said.

Laurie Harbour-Felax of the Royal Oak-based Harbour-Felax Group said, "The fourth quarter is going to be a killer." Harbour-Felax estimated that the Chrysler Group has gone from making a profit of $150 a vehicle last year to losing $1144 a vehicle through the first three quarters of 2006.

Another analyst, who asked not to be identified, suggested that the Chrysler Group's losses could reach $2 billion in the fourth quarter.

Harbour-Felax said the losses are putting enormous pressure on Chrysler to launch a major restructuring similar to those already underway at GM and Ford. "They have got to do something," she said.

Sean McAlinden, vice president of research at the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, said the speculation is that Chrysler could be forced to close three and possibly more plants as part of the restructuring. The company's assembly plants in Newark, Del., and the St. Louis North truck plant as well as the Detroit Axle plant could all be on the chopping block, said McAlinden. He suggested Chrysler may have to eliminate as many as 10,000 jobs.

Mike Aberlich, Daimler-Chrysler spokesman, said seven separate studies, covering every facet of the Chrysler Group's operation, are now underway. The results are to be announced in early 2007. "We're studying everything," Aberlich said. "We wouldn't expect anything to break until we complete the studies."

The studies were launched last month shortly after Chrysler reported a $1.5 billion operating loss for the third quarter.

Harbour-Felax said that one of the challenges Chrysler faces is that it had done a lot of things right in the past few years. The product line has been improved substantially and more new products are due out in 2007.

"It's going to be interesting to see what DaimlerChrysler does," she said.
